The 5 most common mistakes in dental care - What to avoid?

Oral Hygiene is Key to Healthy Teeth and Gums, but Even People Who Care for Their Teeth Often Make Mistakes.
Poor habits can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, or other issues. Here are the 5 most common mistakes to avoid!

1. Brushing Too Hard

Some people believe that brushing harder will remove more plaque and debris. However, it can actually damage the enamel and irritate the gums.

How to Improve It?

  • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and gentle, circular motions.
  • Brushing should take about 2 minutes.

2. Skipping Dental Floss

A toothbrush cannot reach between the teeth, where food particles and bacteria accumulate. Skipping flossing can lead to cavities and gum inflammation.

How to Improve It?

  • Use dental floss or special interdental brushes daily to clean hard-to-reach areas.

3. Brushing Teeth Right After Eating

Food, especially acidic products like fruit or fizzy drinks, weakens enamel. Brushing immediately after eating can damage it further.

How to Improve It?

  • Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth.
  • In the meantime, rinse your mouth with water to remove food residue.

4. Using the Wrong Toothpaste

Not all toothpaste is suitable for everyone. Using the wrong type, such as overly abrasive toothpaste, can worsen sensitivity or enamel problems.

How to Improve It?

  • Choose toothpaste according to your needs – for enamel protection, whitening, or cavity prevention.
  • If in doubt, consult your dentist.

5. Not Replacing Your Toothbrush Often Enough

A worn-out toothbrush is less effective at removing plaque and bacteria. Additionally, dirty bristles can harbor harmful microorganisms.

How to Improve It?

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when the bristles are visibly bent.
  • For electric toothbrushes, change the brush heads at the same intervals.
